- Rhonda Van Zandt, daughter of Baileyton’s first mayor, Rolfe Burks, discusses the history of the site where Baileyton’s town hall now sits during an open house for the new town hall in May.
Paving, parks, and public events: Springtime in Baileyton will have all three this year, as the town gets in gear for warmer weather.
Thanks to a just-released appropriation from Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey’s Rebuild Alabama road initiative, the town will start work on a paving project to improve a section of road near Parkside school. The money will fund paving for a busy three-lane area where school buses enter and exit, “which will really help make that a safer area,” according to mayor Windell Calloway.
“We’re happy to have been approved for that project, and I’d like to thank our legislators — Senator Garlan Gudger and Representative Randall Shedd — for helping it come through,” he added. “I’m also grateful to Mike Knop and also to Joe Perry at the county maintenance department for their assistance.”
Work on the project will likely begin once classes have ended for summer, giving workers time to finish before the start of school this fall.
Elsewhere in town, the park and rec season is set to begin T-ball, baseball, and softball starting April 1, while the town also begins to offer Sprout rural broadband internet access for guests at Baileyton Town Park — a goal the mayor and town council had been working toward for the past year.
The town’s also making preparations for the 2nd Family Fun Day at the park, featuring food vendors, arts and crafts, and lots of kids’ activities alongside a car show that’ll no doubt catch the eyes of kids and adults alike. This year’s Family Fun Day is set for May 28th at the park, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Calloway said the town is also finalizing details for a horse show in June, with a date to be announced in the near future. The public can catch up on the latest local government activity at the town’s monthly council meetings, which are held the first Monday of every month at 7 p.m. in the new town hall that opened in May.
