- West Point's Carlie Wilkins throws a pitch during a game this season.
Carlie Wilkins’ pitching performance on Thursday afternoon was nothing shy of spectacular.
The West Point junior threw a no-hitter against Jasper, striking out 17 batters in a 1-0 home victory.
The UAB commit, who tossed a six-inning no-hitter in 2020, took a perfect game into the seventh inning before plunking a batter with one out.
Lexi Shadix’ solo homer in the first inning accounted for West Point’s lone run. Sydney Sellers finished with two hits, while Shadix, Wilkins, Bethany Minck, Braelee Quinn and Lexi Kimbril each provided one. Shadix and Sellers — the team’s two seniors — were honored prior to the contest.
The Class 5A No. 10 Lady Warriors are now 20-17-2 this season.
“Throwing a no-hitter is definitely a goal I have had for a while and, when I realized I had accomplished it, I felt really excited and happy about it,” Wilkins said. “When I was warming up, I was feeling good and loose and just excited to go play. I think me feeling good going into the game helped me out on the mound.”
Added coach Steven Harbison: “She has been dominant this season and has helped us compete at a high level as a team. She is obviously physically gifted as a pitcher, but what makes her so good is her ability to understand game strategy and pitch to situations. She and her dad (pitching coach Josh Wilkins) have a special relationship where we don’t have a lot of confusion about what we’re trying to accomplish in any given situation.”
West Point recently wrapped up its area title and will host its area tournament for the first time in program history.
