The Class of 1962 of Hanceville High School has made a sizable donation to the high school library in the form of a book per classmate, totaling 69 books including one for Hubert Heck, principal, and senior sponsors Dorothy Morris and Billy Ray.

The tradition began when a classmate died and the class decided to do something besides sending flowers. “The idea was to do something that would be a lasting memorial to each classmate,” said Sue Craig.

The Class of 1962 was formed in the 1959-60 school year when all the students from the feeder schools joined those already attending Hanceville High School.

“We have always been close and to honor our members we began placing a book in the library,” said Craig.

Librarian Mark Adams has worked closely with the group in choosing books needed to maintain an updated library. Each book was chosen to match each classmate in some way. At each class reunion they did an auction or did donations to be able to purchase books. This spring their project was completed with the addition of the last books added in honor of all the classmates still living. A total of $1,650 has been donated to purchase books.
