The Cullman County Board of Education is ridding itself of some legacy properties. At the school board meeting Thursday night, the board agreed to transfer ownership of the old Garden City Elementary School to the town of Garden City.
The board is also working with Cullman County’s legislative delegation to transfer title of the Battleground School, which is currently held by the state.
Board member Heath Albright noted that the properties are not being used by the district, but still have to be insured and maintained by the county school system.
“We have buildings across the district that we don’t use,” he said.
School Superintendent Dr. Shane Barnette said the transfer of the Garden City Elementary School to the town is a “win-win.” The town will be able to fix up the building to use for meetings or community events, and the school board will no longer have the expense of insuring and repairing the building.
The board also agreed to waive fees for the newly-created Cullman Youth Volleyball League.
Barnette said a group of parents volunteered to start the the league.
“Hopefully this fall we’ll have a lot of young people getting a jump start on volleyball,” he said.
Barnette also recognized Good Hope Elementary teacher Jocelyn Logan, the CCBOE Maintenance Department and the West Point Lunchroom Staff for Exceptional Service Awards.
The board went into executive session to discuss the Fiscal Accountability Act before adjourning.
The next meeting of the CCBOE will be Thursday, April 16 beginning at 5:30 p.m.
