Community Census Days mix civic duty with food, fun

With Alabama’s federal funding and Congressional influence on the line for the next ten years, officials are making a coordinated push to boost the local response to the 2020 U.S. Census.

This year’s census opens in Alabama on March 12, and ahead of next week’s starting line, plans are coming together for a series of community events aimed at giving everyone an incentive to fill out their census forms. Beginning Saturday, March 14 and continuing through early June, “Community Census Days” events will be staged at twelve locations throughout Cullman County — with the first set to kick off in Garden City.

As the census looks to drive more responses through the ease of taking things online, the Cullman County Bookmobile will show up at every location with internet-equipped iPads for attendees to use, on site, to get their forms completed. Anyone who completes the census at the event (as well as those who’ve already completed their forms ahead of time) will be eligible for door prizes at each stop, including a 50’’ smart TV, a Walmart gift card, passes to the Cullman Wellness & Aquatic Center, and more.

At Garden City and every event venue in the weeks to come, there’ll be kids’ activities, bouncy houses, disc golf, corn hole games, and — perhaps best of all — food. The idea, say organizers, is to give Cullman County a strong showing so that the local population will be well represented as Congress takes up federal funding apportionments, over the next decade, that are based on an area’s population.
