Several NJN-area baseball and softball teams took the field on Tuesday night. Below is a summary of each contest. 

Senior Madi Maze worked a complete game in the circle, as the Mortimer Jordan softball team captured a 4-2 road win over Helena on Tuesday. Maze worked through the Huskies’ lineup to the tune of 16 strikeouts, two hits allowed and a pair of walks in the win.

For the Blue Devils (1-2) on offense, Mikayla McCain, Sarah Marlow and Savannah Anderson each singled in runs to secure the team’s first win of the young season. 

The Mortimer Jordan baseball team put a 12-2 mercy-rule win on Oneonta in five innings. A 10-run second inning gave starter Austin Morris all the cushion he needed. 

Morris, a sophomore, pitched all five, allowing two runs off two hits to go with eight strikeouts. 

Senior Garrison McCleney was active at the plate where he drew three walks, drove in two runs and came around to score three more for Mortimer Jordan (5-1). Tripp Horton went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs. Logan Duffner singled home two runs in the second and later took a hit-by-pitch to score another with the bases loaded. 

Offense traveled well for the Corner baseball team on Tuesday night at Clay-Chalkville. The Yellow Jackets posted 12 total hits and crossed five runs in the top of the seventh to storm by the Class 6A Cougars, 13-2. 

Tanner Hayes was big on the mound and at the plate for head coach Josh Hoyle. The Lawson State signee drew three walks and drove in four runs. He also logged a six-inning start, allowing a single hit and no earned runs to go with seven strikeouts. 

Hayes Brown closed out the bottom of the seventh by striking out the side. 

Corner outhit Clay-Chalkville 12-2. Chandler Brakefield provided three of those hits and added a pair of RBIs. 

It was a different story for the Gardendale baseball team on Tuesday night at home. The Rockets (3-2) struggled on offense and eventually fell to Jasper by a count of 7-1. 

Gardendale’s one run came in the fifth inning when Isaac Sims swung home CJ Bryant. But the home team would go on to commit three errors and lose the hitting battle, 8-2.

The Gardendale softball team (6-2) erased a four-run deficit to beat Corner 10-8 in the Rockets’ home opener.
