PREP ROUNDUP: Patterson earns 400th win at Cullman; Wilkins tosses no-hitter for Lady Warriors

Brent Patterson reached an incredible milestone on Saturday.

The longtime Cullman baseball coach earned his 400th career win with the Bearcats, who beat Saraland 7-0 to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Patterson, who took over the program prior to the 2009 season, has guided the Black and Gold to a pair of state titles (2015 and 2019) as well as four runner-up finishes (2011, 2014, 2016 and 2017).

He was quick, however, to credit that success to everybody but himself.

“I think a lot about how it should really be spread among the coaching staff and not nearly so attached to my name,” Patterson said. “And how many players have devoted themselves to becoming as good as they can be to help the program be successful. It takes so many people who work silently and selflessly behind the scenes in order for us to do what we get to do and go to the places we get to go.

“The number of wins never crosses my mind until something like this brings it to our attention. Honestly, the first thing that I thought was that I’ve really been in this for a long time. It reminded me how much we all need to slow down and enjoy the relationships and the work the team puts in. Because it all goes by so fast. I’ve just really got a lot to be thankful for.”

No Messing Around

West Point’s Carlie Wilkins tossed a six-inning no-hitter in a 5-0 win over East Lawrence on Saturday.

Wilkins needed just 88 pitches to complete her masterpiece, striking out 13 batters and walking one.

The Lady Warriors went on to win the Warrior Battle later in the day following an 8-1 victory versus Curry.

“Carlie went straight at them,” coach Eric Pendley said. “She was one walk away from perfect. She threw it well all day.”
