Hanceville’s Brodie Malcom dribbles up the court during Tuesday’s game against J.B. Pennington.

HANCEVILLE — The Bulldogs defeated J.B. Pennington 65-54 inside Lane Horton Gymnasium on Tuesday night to advance to the championship game of the Class 3A, Area 12 Tournament.

Hanceville, which improved to 14-12 this season, closed each half with a flurry to help hold off the Tigers.

The Bulldogs held a one-point advantage in the second quarter before using an 18-8 run to claim a 39-28 halftime cushion.

J.B. Pennington, however, kept fighting and made it 59-54 late in the fourth quarter.

But Hanceville finished the matchup on a 6-0 spurt — all of the points came from the free-throw line — to punch its ticket to the title tilt, where it’ll play Glencoe on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Raiden Morgan (16), Brodie Malcom (16) and Tyson Bellmon (15) recorded double-digit outings.

Cainon Moore (nine), Izayah Glenon (six), Zach Campbell (two) and Matthew Cornelius (one) also contributed for coach Stephen Chandler’s squad.

“We had to keep grinding it out,” Chandler said. “Pennington stepped up and did a good job contesting shots and packing their zone in. We couldn’t really get inside too much. A couple of our seniors started getting it together and getting to the rim and playing defense and trying to fight through it on a night where it wasn’t going our way. It was a battle, but we pulled through.”
