Hee Haw Revue gears up to say ‘Howdy!’

- Recognize any of these folks? If you’re humming the Hee Haw theme song, well, then you’ve bet on the right horse. For the second year in a row, local nonprofit Senior Outreach is tuning up for its annual Hee Haw variety show, featuring a fun-loving cast of all-local seniors.
Walking into the Hanceville Civic Center Wednesday was like walking down a country road lined with a stable full of funny memories for anyone who spent time tuning in to Hee Haw back in the 1970s and 80s.
More than two dozen local seniors, each kitted up in full costume and happy to be in character to play the roles of Buck Owens, Roy Clark, Minnie Pearl and more, had the place buzzing as local nonprofit Senior Outreach staged the first of several dress rehearsals ahead of a pair of February performances aimed at both fun-loving senior citizens and the general public.
Conceived as a way to help seniors connect with the community and with each other, and have some fun in the process, the local take on Hee Haw enters its second year bigger and more ambitious than before, according to Senior Outreach organizer Jamie Brown.
“This one’s much bigger, probably by half, than the first one we did last year,” said Brown Wednesday. “We’ve got bigger skits, a lot more seniors involved, and we even have two shows this time around, to give everybody a chance to come and enjoy it.
“We had people who had to stand at the one show that we held last year, so this time we’re splitting into two shows: one for people ages 50 and older at the Donald Green Center in Cullman, and then another one here at the Hanceville Civic Center, which will be for everyone.”
The Donald Green Center show is slated for Thursday, Feb. 13 at 2 p.m., while the Hanceville show will kick off at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 29. A $5 donation is requested in lieu of admission at each event, with funds going back into the Senior Outreach coffers to help stage next year’s performance.
Brown said there’ll be more dress rehearsals in the coming weeks to get the quirky cast of characters ready for the spotlight, and judging from all the horseplay going on at the first one Wednesday, it’s unlikely anyone in the 30-plus-member cast is complaining.
