FAIRVIEW — Fairview residents, as well as drivers accustomed to making their commute along Ala. Highway 69 in eastern Cullman County will soon notice a change to their standard route.

After years of discussion, planning and highway department meetings, the town of Fairview is receiving a new stop light. At the town’s Monday council meeting, council members voted to approve the Alabama Department of Transportation’s maintenance agreement — the crucial final step in the installment process.

The new traffic signal will be placed at the intersection of Ala. Highway 69 and Wesley Avenue. Former Fairview mayor and current Alabama Rep. Randall Shedd (R-Fairview) worked with current mayor Keith Henry and the town council to secure the light, thanks to newly-available funds collected through the state’s recently-imposed gas tax.

In addition to normal meeting business, council members discussed placing security cameras throughout Fairview Town Park.

The park has fallen victim to various, frequent acts of vandalism costing the city hundreds of dollars over the last several months, according to Henry. With the installment of the security system, the city hopes to put a stop to the ongoing and unresolved property crime problem. The council tabled the action on acquiring the cameras for the time being, and will return to the topic over the coming months.

The council’s next regularly scheduled meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at the Fairview Town Hall.
