The Berlin Town Council Monday decided to continue working without pay for another year.

“We started off unpaid — state law said we had to — and we saw no reason to change that,” said Mayor Patrick Bates. “There’s a lot more important things that need to be done than pay the council.”

One of those items is hiring a new city clerk. The previous clerk resigned to take a full-time position, and the town has been advertising for someone to fill the part-time job. The council expected to interview candidates at its meeting Monday, but none showed up. The council is holding a special meeting Monday, Nov. 25 to give it time to find new candidates.

The council also approved hiring Conn Surveyors to do a topographical study of the 20-acres the town purchased last year. Long-term plans are to build a town hall and town center on the property, but in the short-term, the council and mayor are “looking at the possibility of establishing a farmer’s market this summer,” said Bates.

The next meeting of the Berlin town council will take place Monday at the Berlin Community Center at 7 p.m.
