DANVILLE — Cold Springs’ boys cross country team capped off a perfect season at Saturday’s state meet with a tremendous performance at Oakville Indian Mounds.

The Eagles crushed the Class 1A/2A field, finishing 83 points clear of runner-up Whitesburg Christian to earn the program’s first Blue Map trophy since 2015.

Ethan Edgeworth (third), Jonathan Collett (fourth), Cole Akridge (seventh), Will Grimmett (ninth) and Aaron Spurger (12th) delivered the top times for Cold Springs, and all five garnered All-State honors for finishing inside the top 15.

Not a bad way close out a dominant 2019 campaign.

“It was very cool to win,” Collett said. “We laid it all out there for each other. It’s something special. I want to thank all the guys ahead of me and all the guys coming up behind me. It’s been special here.”

Collett, Akridge, Grimmett, Spurger and Seth Walker comprise the Blue and Gold’s senior class.

With them and the eighth-grader, Edgeworth, leading the way, the Eagles won all 10 meets they entered this fall.

“It felt amazing,” Collett said of the run. “But we definitely knew what we wanted to win at the end of the season. And that was state.”

Added first-year coach Casey Howell: “At the beginning of the year, we set some goals. And our first goal was to keep God first. I remember early in the year we didn’t have the best practice. And we got the guys together and just said, ‘Everything you do, remember who you are. You’re children of God.’ And from that point on, we literally took it day by day. We didn’t have a bad practice and said that we weren’t going to have a bad race. We were OK with whatever the results were. We can live with that knowing we gave everything we had and were going to give God the praise.”

St. Bernard’s Caleb Guthery (third in 3A), Cullman’s Will Thompson (third in 6A), St. Bernard’s Joseph Arriaga (13th in 3A) and Fairview’s Peyton Bailey (14th in 4A) each secured All-State honors following speedy performances in their respective classifications.

Cold Springs’ girls, meanwhile, finished second in 1A/2A by the slimmest of margins.

The Lady Eagles netted 80 points — same as Whitesburg Christian and Altamont — but fell just short in the resulting tiebreaker.

Whitesburg Christian’s sixth-place runner was 31st. Cold Springs’ sixth-place runner was 33rd.

Reagan Parris (second), Brooke Crider (14th), Hayla Watson (21st), Ava Akridge (24th) and Allison White (29th) helped the Blue and Gold take home the Red Map trophy.

Parris and Crider claimed All-State honors, as did Holly Pond’s Camilla Chambers (second in 3A) and St. Bernard’s Madi Kerber (11th in 3A).
