HANCEVILLE — Tanner Malin turned in an excellent performance on Friday night to help Good Hope close out the regular season with a 28-18 road victory versus Hanceville.

The sophomore quarterback had a pair of touchdown passes and added another score on the ground for the Raiders, who improved to 8-2 overall.

The Bulldogs, meanwhile, wrapped up the fall with a 3-7 record.

“It wasn’t pretty at times,” Good Hope coach Alan Scott said. “We had moments where we executed well, and there were times where we didn’t. Hanceville took advantage of that. Coach (Cody) McCain had his guys ready to play. But I’m thankful that our guys have played like they have all year long and that they finished out the season 8-2. It’s a great season after losing the seniors we lost last year.”

Hanceville jumped out to a 6-0 lead midway through the first quarter following an 18-yard touchdown strike from Bo Joles to Trevor Shadden.

Good Hope, however, responded with authority.

Malin threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Drew Maddox on his team’s next possession before Colton Bagwell secured a 15-yard scoring scamper in the second quarter to put the Raiders up 14-6. Malin’s 1-yard TD plunge later in the frame helped Good Hope claim a 21-6 halftime advantage.

The Raiders extended that lead to 28-6 on their first drive of the second half following Malin’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Jager Burns.

The Bulldogs, though, didn’t roll over down the stretch.

Joles found Brodie Malcom from 13 yards out to make it 28-12.

Hanceville then forced a turnover early in the fourth quarter, and Joles cashed it in with a 2-yard dash — set up by his 69-yard run on a 4th-and-1 play — to bring the Bulldogs to within 10 (28-18).

Unfortunately for the home squad, that’s as close as it got the rest of the way.

“It was a little sloppy,” Scott said. “Any time you’ve got a lead, you’re ready for that clock to hit zero. They’ve got great athletes and have been scoring a lot of points. So we weren’t very comfortable until it was all over.”

Malin completed 10 of 19 passes for 122 yards. He added 33 yards on nine carries.

Bagwell carried the ball 26 times for 143 yards.

Maddox (four catches for 54 yards), Burns (three catches for 40 yards; four carries for 27 yards), and Ethan Anderson (five carries for 70 yards; two catches for 30 yards) also made plays.

Maddox added an interception.

Good Hope will travel to Oneonta next Friday night for the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.

The Redskins eliminated the Raiders in the quarterfinals last season.

“It’s great to be in the playoffs,” Scott said. “For us to go back to back, I’m very pleased. To play a team like Oneonta, it’s going to be an interesting matchup. They’ve had a fantastic season, so I think it should be a really good matchup.”

Joles finished his night 19-of-36 passing for 188 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

He also racked up 84 yards and another score on 26 carries.

Garrett Riggs (seven catches for 88 yards), Zach Campbell (six catches for 41 yards), Malcom (five catches for 41 yards) and Shadden (one catch for 18 yards) were his top targets through the air.

Despite the loss, McCain lauded his team’s effort this season.

“I am proud of our guys,” he said. “A lot of nights, we were only dressing 21 or 22 guys. And the last month of the season, we played really hard against four playoff teams. Excited to have 100 percent of our offensive production back next year.”
