Suspect in double homicide dies after suicide attempt

The suspect in a double homicide who had attempted suicide has died, according to Cullman County Coroner Jeremy Kilpatrick.

Cullman County Detention Center Deputies discovered Matthew Lewayne Clayton, 30, at approximately 10 p.m. Friday. He was being treated at an area hospital.

The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation was called per Cullman County Sheriff’s Office policy.

Clayton was charged with the Monday, Oct. 21 murder of Thomas Frank DeWille, 76, of Owens Cross Roads, and Rollan Frank Edwards, 75, of the Prospect Mountain area, as well as the attempted murder of Jody Jay Tudor, 48, also of Prospect Mountain.

Cullman County Sheriff Office investigators discovered both knife and gunshot wounds on the victims.

Gentry has declined to offer a specific motive, but said the violence appears to stem from a lingering interpersonal issue involving the suspect and victims.

Gentry said that all three victims lived together at the residence, and that Clayton lived at a separate residence nearby.
