Cold Springs didn’t just start the season with a win on Thursday — the Eagles also posted their first shutout in nearly four years.
Cold Springs traveled home from Meek with a 25-0 victory to open the 2019 season, marking its first shutout since Sept. 4, 2015 when it defeated Southeastern 55-0.
“It doesn’t matter who you play or when you play or what time of year it is, a shutout is always good,” Cold Springs head coach Rod Elliott said.
The Eagles (1-0) had a handful of playmakers, but no one shined brighter than Lawson Burgess. The senior forced the first of three Meek turnovers, intercepting a pass in the opening quarter and returning it 45 yards to the 1-yard line. Ayden Alexander got Cold Springs on the board by punching it in for the score.
Burgess made another big play in the second quarter when he was on the connecting end of a 62-yard strike from Brodi Williams, which gave the Eagles a 12-0 lead.
Jordan Lacey added a 2-yard touchdown run just before the half to give the Eagles an 18-0 advantage at the break.
“We’re playing a style of offense that’s different than what we have in years past. Big plays are part of that offense, and you need those to be successful,” Elliott said. “They were trying to take some things away from us in the run game early on, and we were able to take advantage and have some big plays early on. It was really just about our execution. We executed those things, and they ended up being big plays for us.”
Alexander added a 2-yard touchdown run for the game’s final score.
Cold Springs is on the road against next Friday as it travels to Berry.
