A Cullman County man is dead following an officer-involved shooting Sunday near Hanceville.
Cullman County Coroner Jeremy Kilpatrick identified Robert Clay Wilsford, 65, as the man who was killed Sunday afternoon on County Road 599 after Hanceville Police say he threatened an officer with a gun.
Officers with the Alabama Bureau of Investigation (ABI) were at the scene of the scene of the shooting to investigate.
In a statement released on Facebook late Sunday, the Hanceville Police Department confirmed that one man had been shot and killed in the incident, after the deceased subject allegedly opened fire on at least one Hanceville officer, who was responding at the residence to conduct a requested welfare check.
“Law enforcement, fire and medical personnel all provided immediate first aid to the suspect,” Hanceville police said, “but he was pronounced dead a short time later.” No officers or other bystanders were injured in the incident.
The residence where the shooting occurred lies outside the Hanceville city limits, but within the Hanceville Police Department’s jurisdiction. County Road 599 is closed to through traffic until ABI has finished processing the scene.
