Local veterans office shuffles hours as staff transitions

Hours at the Cullman County Veterans Service Office are being temporarily reduced as the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs looks to fill a vacancy on the Cullman office’s two-person staff.

Starting today, the Cullman service office will be closed indefinitely every Wednesday, both because of recent job turnover and because the local office has an itinerant staffing relationship that takes a staff member to Blount County once each week.

Tuesday marked the last day of employment for former Veterans Service officer Darrell Brewer, who voluntarily left to accept an outside position. Until Veterans Affairs names a replacement, Brewer’s resignation leaves the Cullman office staffed by a single employee, assistant Veteran Service officer Candace Reppond.

Located on the first floor of the Cullman County Courthouse, the local Veterans Service office is typically a busy place, with staff often consulting with a dozen or more veterans each day. The office serves as a single point of contact where local veterans can receive ongoing casework assistance to help guide everything from medical claims to disability applications to widows’ benefits.

For now, the office will be open every weekday except Wednesdays at its usual 8 a.m – 4:30 p.m. time. The state Veterans Affairs Office also is referring local veterans to consider using offices in Limestone, Jackson, Morgan and Marshall Counties until the Cullman location can resume its regular schedule.
