The Cullman County Public Library will be a little more magical than usual next week when the library hosts a birthday party for a beloved book character.

July 31 is Harry Potter’s birthday, and the library is inviting the public — muggles included — to celebrate the occasion with cake, games, giveaways and other activities from 3-5 p.m.

Party organizer Debra Reynolds said she hopes the party will bring plenty of guests to the library and hopes that the party goers are able to dress in their best wizarding robes.

“Costumes are encouraged,” she said. “I am a proud Ravenclaw so I will be wearing my cape.”

She said a poster from the first movie will be made into a birthday card that guests can sign to wish Harry a happy birthday, and the library will also have a photo set that will let visitors take pictures, and it will include a few props from the series like glasses, wands and a “Daily Prophet” newspaper.

Some of the attendees may already know which house they would belong to if they attended Hogwarts, but Reynolds said the library has a Sorting Hat and she hopes to be able to sort guests into Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw if they have never gone through the process.

“We can put the Sorting Hat on their heads, ask them a few questions and sort them into houses,” she said.

Reynolds said she hopes the party will bring people into the library to let them see all of the things that they have to offer and some of the events that are happening there throughout the year.

“The main thing is getting them into the library and get them exposed to what’s here,” she said.
