BIRMINGHAM — Prosecutors say they’re seeking the death penalty against two people indicted on capital murder charges in the slaying of an Alabama couple.
Al.com reports court documents say prosecutors want death for 24-year-old Zachary Phillips, of Marshall County, and 30-year-old Kristen Gullion, of Cullman as the slayings were committed for monetary gain during a burglary or robbery. Phillips and Gullion share a child and were on probation for separate theft-related crimes at the time of the 2018 deaths.
Phillips also is indicted on a charge of kidnapping as the couple’s 3-year-old granddaughter was tied up with a phone cord and put in a bathtub during the killings. She later appeared covered in blood on a neighbor’s doorstep, where she said her “Nene” wouldn’t get up. Responding officers found Mary and Joe Holt stabbed to death.
