AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — The teen charged with manslaughter in the deaths of Auburn radio announcer Rod Bramblett and his wife was driving more than 30 miles over the speed limit and accelerating when he slammed into the back of the couple’s SUV.

Auburn police on Monday announced charges against 16-year-old Johnston Edward Taylor. Court records made public Tuesday provide more detail in what led to the charges against the Lee Scott Academy high school student.

AL.com reports a toxicology report of Taylor’s blood “indicated that Taylor’s blood sample contained THC, which is the primary psychoactive component of marijuana, and is indicative of recent usage of marijuana at the time of the collision.”

The deadly crash happened May 25 in Auburn, Alabama.

The affidavit released Tuesday states the report from ALEA’s Traffic Homicide Unit states that Taylor’s Jeep Laredo was accelerating from a speed of 89 mph to 91 mph in a 55-mph zone when the crash happened. There was no braking, according to the report.

Taylor told authorities he fell asleep at the wheel and did not remember what happened, according to the police report.

Auburn police previously ruled out the use of a phone as a contributing factor in the cause of the crash and previously said alcohol was not a factor.

The teen was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries following the crash.

Paula Bramblett, 53, was airlifted from the scene but had to be diverted to East Alabama Medical Center due to the severity of her injuries. She was pronounced dead in the emergency room from multiple internal injuries.

Rod Bramblett, 52, was airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where he later died from a closed head injury.

The warrants against Taylor were obtained Monday and he was booked into the Lee County Detention Center on $50,000. He was later released on bond.

A court date has not yet been set in the case.

Bramblett was known as the voice of the Auburn Tigers’ sports teams.
