HANCEVILLE — Hanceville residents who’ve been waiting to stage a yard sale to rid themselves of some extra clutter will soon have the ideal opportunity to do just that, when the annual community-wide three-day yard sale arrives next month.

In keeping with tradition, the Hanceville City Council voted Thursday to waive the usual $5 permit fee required to hold a yard sale inside the city limits. The waiver is good for the duration of the event, which will take place from July 11 to July 13.

Hanceville Mayor Kenneth Nail said the city is even happy to accommodate residents who may not have their own venue for holding a sale, by providing access to city-owned property — so long as there’s no conflict.

“If you don’t have a place for it, people can check with us to see if it may be possible to let them use our space — the parking lot at city hall, or, if there’s nothing scheduled that overlaps, at the civic center,” he said. “Just call city hall and tell us what your needs are if you’re interested, and we may be able to work something out.”

In other business, the council:

Agreed to hire Tim Burney as the architect for the city’s planned new senior center, should the city receive the grant funding necessary to realize the project.

Approved bills payable for the current fiscal period.

Approved the minutes of its June 13 regular meeting.

Retired into executive session to discuss a property acquisition matter. The council took no action following the session.
