BIRMINGHAM — The inaugural Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Elite 100 Showcase took place over the weekend, and several area basketball stars seized the opportunity to demonstrate their skills under the watchful eyes of numerous college and high school coaches.

Good Hope’s Cole Maddox went toe-to-toe with some of the state’s top talent at Hoover High School.

Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl and Alabama assistant Antoine Pettway both attended the showcase, which allowed players the chance to shine in various drills and scrimmages.

Toni West (Cold Springs), Anna Katherine Eastman (Cullman), Hannah Hoffman (Cullman), Cassidy Campbell (Hanceville), Kelly Pickett (Hanceville), Mackenzie Carter (West Point), Miriam Oldacre (West Point) and Lexi Shadix (West Point) made the journey to Spain Park High School for their showcase.

Elizabeth Hill (Cold Springs) also received an invitation but didn’t attend due to offseason surgery.

Cold Springs’ Tammy West

“I thought it was great. I thought the coaches had it organized — they kept it going. Give (Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association Director) Jamie Lee credit for coming up with this. A lot of these girls don’t get to go play in large tournaments, so this was an opportunity for them. I thought it was a great camp. I really enjoyed watching the girls work and go through drills. I know some of our local players have been contacted and have

received feedback from some college coaches.”

Cullman’s Josh Hembree

“Kudos to coach (Jamie) Lee for putting this event on. Coach (Tim) Miller and coach (Mike) Chase did a great job. It was a pleasure to work with coach (Tammy) West and coach (John) Welborn to see what other people are thinking and to get ideas. This is probably the best basketball camp some of these kids have ever been to. They got to work on several different things. As a coach, it was awesome to see so many kids out there. We didn’t see any bad attitudes. We had kids who were working hard, coachable and soaking up information. I think that speaks to the caliber of kids we have in the state.”

“Going into it, I was nervous knowing this was my biggest shot to get offers and get coaches’ interest. But after you get into the flow of things, you just start playing ball and settling down. It was a great experience to also see how I rank with the best in Alabama and know what I need to improve on.”

“I thought the experience was really fun and relatively challenging. I thought it was well organized. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but when I saw my Cullman County girls there, I felt more comfortable. It was a great opportunity to get exposure. I was really thankful for all the coaches there who came out to help with the showcase.”
