Tree population improving; Some suffering urban decline

The state of trees in the City of Cullman remains good, but some of the city’s older trees are facing the problem of growing too large for their space.
During Tuesday morning’s meeting of the Cullman Tree Commission, City Arborist Darrell Johns said he has recently seen a few trees that are dying from that cause.
“We have had some die, really from not any particular disease, just urban decline,” he said. “They just get too large and old for the space that they’ve got to live in.”
He said he has marked some of those trees for removal because of the danger that they could fall into the street, including ones on St. Joseph Drive and Denson Avenue.
Johns said he has also recently heard from several property owners in the city who have questions about the health of their trees.
He said he is not able to do any work on trees that are on private property, but he can provide a consultation to landowners as long as they live in the city limits.
“I try to go out and explain it to them as best as I possibly can,” he said.
Johns said anyone who would like to make an appointment with him to get advice about their tree can call him at 256-709-0414.
The Cullman Tree Commission meets at Cullman City Hall on the third Tuesday of every other month at 10 a.m. It’s next meeting is set for Aug. 18.
