Cullman Fire Rescue Division Chief of Operations Darren Peeples said the house was in a wooded area down a narrow drive that was difficult for the larger fire engines to enter.

“We were able to get the smaller engines in close enough to get the fire under control,” Peeples said. “We know that no one was in the house at the time of the fire, but it took a while to get it where it wouldn’t spread into the woods. Everyone did a good job on the scene.”

Most of the house eventually collapsed, except for a wall on the north side. Firefighters remained at the scene for several hours to ensure the flames did not reignite during the day.

Firefighters are continuing to investigate the cause.
