Mortimer Jordan 5, Ardmore 0

Left fielder Maia Townsend squared up her first-ever home run, Madi Maze pitched a one-hit shutout and Mortimer Jordan advanced through the Class 5A losers’ bracket with a 5-0 win over Ardmore.

Townsend, a freshman, went 3 for 4 against the Tigers with a single, a solo home run and an RBI double. Junior Danilyn Moore also homered for the Blue Devils and finished 2 for 3.

Mortimer Jordan’s first run scored in the top of the second inning when third baseman Anna Purvis lined one into left field. The hard-hit ball skipped past a diving effort and rolled to the fence while Purvis galloped all the way around for an inside-the-park home run.

The Blue Devils led 1-0 and that would be all Maze needed. She held the Tigers to a 1-for-19 outing at the plate. The lone hit was a soft lob into short-right field in the bottom of the seventh. Maze struck out nine batters after recording 15 strikeouts against Rehobeth less than 24 hours earlier.

Maze fanned her ninth batter in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded.
