Gardendale bags 3rd straight regional title; McCain doubles Jordan past Springville

TUSCALOOSA—Local softball teams—four of them to be exact—have finished the first two days of the West-Central Regional Tournament with mixed results. Below is a game-by-game recap from Tuscaloosa.

For the third straight season, the Gardendale softball team (45-6-2) has claimed the regional championship with a perfect 3-0 outing in Tuscaloosa. The No. 3-ranked Rockets beat Shades Valley, Pell City and Homewood to complete the Class 6A sweep, and have now won 20 of their last 23 ballgames as the state tournament approaches.

Including three wins last week at the Area 11 Tournament, the Rockets have now outscored their last six opponents by a combined score of 78-7.

Gardendale will play its state tournament opener next Wednesday at 9 a.m. against the No. 2 qualifier out of the South Regional: seventh-ranked Baldwin County. The state tournament will be played at Lagoon Park in Montgomery. 

Gardendale 15, Shades Valley 4 (five innings)

Gardendale 5, Pell City 3

Gardendale trailed early and late, but pushed three runs across in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-3 advantage that later went final in Tuscaloosa. The Rockets tied things up at 1-1 in the third, jumped out front 2-1 in the fourth, fell behind 3-2 in the top of the sixth and answered with three decisive runs in the home-half to earn a date with Homewood in the No. 1 qualifier game.

Gardendale 13, Homewood 0 (five innings)

Left fielder Jaycee Dill broke things open with a three-run shot in the third inning, as Gardendale tore past the Homewood Patriots 13-0 in the Class 6A West-Central Regional championship game on Friday night. While senior Kaitlyn Clark worked a five-inning shutout in the circle, Gardendale scratched one across in the first, six runs in the third, five in the fourth and one in the fifth. The Rockets outhit Homewood 13-2 to punch their state tournament ticket.

The Pinson Valley softball team (21-28) opened up the Class 6A West-Central Regional Tournament with a 6-2 win over Hueytown, but dropped its next two games against Homewood and McAdory to bring its 2019 season to a close. The Indians end their season as the runner-up out of Area 12 with a record of 21-30.

McAdory ended the Indians’ season with a single run in the seventh, breaking a 3-3 tie.

The Fultondale softball team (6-20) endured a long, wet Thursday in Tuscaloosa.

The Wildcats went 0-2 on the first day of the West-Central Regional Tournament in Tuscaloosa, ending their season with a record of 6-20. Thanks to a six-hour weather delay, Fultondale’s two games started more than 10 hours apart. The season-ender—an 18-7 loss to Lamar County—went final at around 9:30 p.m.

The Mortimer Jordan softball team (35-13) opened up the Class 5A West-Central Regional Tournament with back-to-back wins on Friday, which earns them a berth in the regional championship game on Monday against the winner of No. 1 Hayden-No. 7 Alexandria. 

The fifth-ranked Blue Devils started with a 3-2 win over No. 3 Springville and held on for a 4-3 win over Southside-Gadsden in the nightcap.

Blue Devil freshman Mikayla McCain doubled home two runs in the top of the fifth, junior righty Madi Maze tossed two-run ball and Mortimer Jordan notched its biggest win of the 2019 season on Friday in Tuscaloosa.
