- Cullman’s Peyton Colvard, left, is greeted by Niklas Fondren after completing an inning during Game 2 against Pell City on Friday.
Cullman strolled past Pell City 7-1 in Game 2 of Friday’s Class 6A second-round playoff series, setting up a pivotal tiebreaker Saturday at 2 p.m.
The 6A No. 7 Bearcats (23-12) dropped Game 1 versus the Panthers (23-11) 4-3, but Peyton Colvard put together a stellar performance on the mound in the nightcap to force a Game 3.
Colvard scattered four hits and four strikeouts in seven strong innings on the mound.
Cullman took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Colvard (RBI single), Ben Hollis (RBI groundout) and Brady Patterson (RBI single) contributed.
The Bearcats racked up another run in the sixth inning — Hollis hit a sacrifice fly — and three more in the seventh inning — Colvard followed a two-run error by Pell City with another RBI single — to seal the deal late in the home contest.
Colvard (two RBIs) and Niklas Fondren crafted two hits apiece in the win.
Patterson (RBI), Cooper Beck, Dylon Wallace and Nicholas Braswell notched one apiece.
Hollis provided two RBIs as well.
The Panthers struck first in the opener, scoring two runs in the first inning and another in the second.
Brennen Norton, however, smacked a two-run homer in the fourth inning to bring Cullman to within one.
Fondren came around to score on a passed ball in the sixth inning to tie things at 3-all.
Unfortunately for Cullman, Pell City came up with a clutch RBI single in the eight inning to win the game.
Beck (two hits), Norton (one hit and two RBIs), Colvard (one hit) and Wallace (one hit) contributed.
