- Cullman's Peyton Colvard pitches on Saturday.
Cullman earned a road sweep of Albertville in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs on Saturday.
The No. 7 Bearcats (22-11) secured a 4-3 victory in the opener before eliminating the Aggies with a 6-1 triumph in Game 2 to advance to the second round for the 18th consecutive season.
Brady Patterson (HBP) and Ben Hollis (single) each racked up an RBI in the first inning of Game 1 to help Cullman snag an early 2-0 lead.
Albertville, however, tied the game following a pair of runs in the second frame.
But Brennen Norton’s RBI single in the fourth inning put the Bearcats in front 3-2 before Peyton Colvard tacked on an insurance run with a sacrifice fly shortly afterward.
The Aggies cut their deficit to one in the sixth frame, but Cullman held on for the win.
Norton (RBI) and Cooper Beck crafted two hits apiece, while Patterson (RBI), Hollis (RBI), Cole Fuller and Niklas Fondren each produced one. Colvard finished with an RBI.
Braxton Jones corralled the win on the mound, scattering six hits, three earned runs and four strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. Norton struck out two and didn’t allow a hit (1 1/3 innings) to pick up the save.
The latter escaped a two-on situation in the sixth inning with a key strikeout.
Colvard, meanwhile, stole the show in Game 2.
The right-hander took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before surrendering a one-out single.
He allowed just two hits and struck out five batters in the complete game effort.
Colvard also paced the Bearcats offensively with two hits and two RBIs.
Cullman grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning following an Albertville error.
The Black and Gold added three runs in the third inning — an RBI single by Beck and a two-run single by Colvard — and two more in the fifth inning — an RBI single by Patterson and another Albertville error — to quickly put the matchup out of reach.
Beck (RBI) and Fondren had two hits apiece, while Patterson (RBI) and Nicholas Braswell each had one.
“I was proud of our guys,” coach Brent Patterson said. “I think it all started with Braxton’s strong performance on the mound. He really competed and threw the ball well. Offensively, I thought we had good at-bats, and a lot of people contributed. There were four guys in the lineup that had an RBI, and that is something that this team has done throughout the season. Different guys seem to step up and come up big when we need them. It was a good team win with a lot of guys contributing in different ways.
“Peyton Colvard was in complete control in Game 2. He worked fast and threw a ton of strikes. Again, the offense was spread around, and we just played a solid, fairly clean game.”
Cullman will take on Pell City next week in the second round. A location hasn’t been determined.
