DORA—Coaches, players and family took some time Thursday afternoon to recognize five Corner High School student-athletes in the school’s cafeteria.

Jiselle Woodson (basketball), Trent Davis (football), Abby Schenck (softball), Brantly Bonds (softball) and Ivey Hill (softball) represent the Yellow Jackets’ Class of 2019, and each have signed national letters of intent in their respective sports.

Davis will take the football field as a preferred walk-on at UAB next fall. According to Corner head football coach Jon Clements and defensive coordinator Rusty Rouse, Davis, an outside linebacker, was an irreplaceable leader on the defensive side of the ball.

Woodson, a point guard and a member of the 2018-19 All-North Jefferson News Basketball Team, has signed a basketball scholarship with Wallace State Community College. As a senior at Corner, Woodson averaged 17.8 points per game, which lander her honorable-mention status on the ASWA Class 5A All-State Basketball Team. Her soon-to-be head coach in Hanceville, Jessica McBrayer, was in attendance.

Three of Woodson’s teammates on the Corner High School softball team—Hill, Bonds and Schenck—will also further their academic and athletics careers.

Hill, the Jackets’ ace pitcher, has signed with Northwest Florida State College, where coach Cadi Oliver can’t wait to get her left arm on campus.

“Her being a lefty was a big thing for us,” said Oliver. “We saw her video and she’s this cute little small-town girl, but you could just tell that she had some fierceness to her.”

As of now, Hill is the only left-hander in the Raiders’ 2019 signing class.

Bonds has also inked down with Wallace State Community College in Hanceville and Schenck has signed with Bevill State Community College.

Corner head softball coach, Karen Atkins, believes these four seniors will impact her team even after their commencement this May. 

“I think this group has just set a tone for my underclassmen,” said Atkins. “That’s what I’m most impressed with—they are good for my younger athletes; they’re good leaders and they set a good example. I like that.”

Despite their status as seniors, Hill, Bonds, Schenck and Woodson, according to their head coach, not only encourage younger players but openly invite them to compete for their own place in the lineup.

“They’re not like, ‘Oh, you can’t take my place.’ They’re like, ‘Take my place. outwork me.’ and that’s what you want in your program,” said Atkins. “They don’t think of themselves as better. They think of themselves as equal.”

The leadership provided by Ivey Hill, Abby Schenck, Jiselle Woodson and Brantly Bonds has helped the seventh-ranked Corner softball team to a 21-9 overall record, which includes a Class 5, Area 11 mark of 5-2.
