Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced that search warrants were executed Tuesday on four gambling facilities in Jefferson County by state agents from his office, with agents with the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation.
According to a release from Marshall’s office, “The involvement of state law enforcement was necessary due to the opening of multiple facilities offering illegal electronic games and the failure of local law enforcement to enforce the law.”
Jefferson County Sheriff Mark Pettway has previously said that gambling operations were not a priority of his office.
According to the release, several people were arrested and charged with multiple counts of promoting gambling and possession of gambling devices. They were not named.
According to Marshall’s office, cease and desist letters were issued to the facilities, as well as the municipalities that permitted them to open, over the past weeks.
The warrants resulted in the seizure of over 1,100 electronic bingo machines, records and an unspecified amount of money from two locations in Brighton, one in Midfield and Spin It & Win It Bingo in Graysville.
