With April approaching, plans have been announced for the return of walking tours focusing on history and architecture in downtown Cullman.

The hour-long tours start at 10 a.m. on April 6, 13, 20 and 27. Each tour begins at the Cullman County Museum.

Different guides lead the tours and may take alternative routes through the town, weaving in interesting sites and stories along the way.

“This is always a great way to explore re-explore your community,” said Drew Green, museum director. “We always have a lot of people locally who have become interested in history or want to reacquaint themselves with history. We also see visitors coming in to learn more about the Cullman area.”

The tour routes are designed to end near the museum after an hour. Those on the tour have the option to stop there or continue and learn about more historical places, Green said.

He said the museum will also be open on the days of the tours, with free admission fee.

Green said the tours will go on rain or shine, but they will be stopped if the weather turns more severe.

He said the usual crowd is around 20 people, but a pretty day can see crowds of around 40 people.

The tours are also meant to be interactive, and people are encouraged to ask any questions that they may have or share any additional information that they know, Green said.

Green said he has learned interesting facts from people who have taken the tours over the years, and the guides like to learn more about the city from the people who live there. 

“The tours are also part of the Alabama Bicentennial, which includes events leading up to the actually anniversary date on Dec. 14,” Green said. “We have information of those events that are ahead. It’s going to be an active spring for those who enjoy history.”

The museum is located at 211 2nd Ave NE, across from Cullman City Hall.
