- Smoke drifts across downtown Cullman Friday afternoon because of two fires in the region.
Residents can expect more smoke drifting through area, depending on wind direction, as the U.S. Forestry Commission conducts controlled burns in Bankhead National Forest.
The burns are occurring in Winston and Lawrence counties are expected to continue this weekend, according to a release from the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office.
The smoke left a sun-blocking haze over portions of Cullman County on Friday afternoon as wind from west carried through a large portion of the area.
Firefighters in Hanceville were also involved in putting out a grass fire at the same time the Bankhead Forest smoke came into the area.
