Lions’ fish and ham dinner beats the rain

- Cullman Lions club members Carey Thompson, left, and Gordon Boyd pause in the kitchen Saturday, March 9, 2019 at Cullman middle School, where the Cullman Lions club’s annual fish and ham dinner drew crowds both before and after the afternoon’s storms rolled through.
Storms and grey skies didn’t wash out this year’s fish and ham dinner hosted at Cullman Middle School by the local Lions Club. They only made the crowds denser.
“For a little while the weather was really bad, but overall it’s still been a good turnout,” said Lions member Don Smith, taking tickets for the fundraiser alongside fellow Lions member Steve Singleton.
“If anything, people came out all at once a little earlier at the lunch hour, and it was really, really busy. It got quiet for a while when the weather got bad, but then everyone came back out again after the storms passed.”
One of the club’s signature annual fundraisers, the dinner helps the local Lions club resupply its coffers to aid local nonprofits. “The Cullman County Fair is our biggest event each year,” said Lions member Gordon Boyd. “But we count on this one too, and it’s been a really good day.”
