Published 11:00 pm Saturday, March 9, 2019

All-State basketball teams were released on Saturday.

It took plenty of key pieces for Cold Springs’ girls to claim their latest state basketball championship.

Now, a trio of Lady Eagles are being recognized for their tremendous efforts this season and down the stretch.

Camryn Crider and Elizabeth Hill each netted first-team accolades in Class 2A, while Tammy West was named Coach of the Year when the Alabama Sports Writers’ Association unveiled the 2018-19 All-State boys and girls basketball teams late Saturday night.

Crider and Hill weren’t the only local players to draw All-State attention.

Cole Maddox (Good Hope) and Kyler Chaney (Holly Pond) garnered second-team honors, while Kelly Pickett (Hanceville) and Miriam Oldacre (West Point) claimed third-team status.

Cullman’s Anna Katherine Eastman was named an honorable mention.

West, meanwhile, led Cold Springs to its first state title since 2009 and fourth in program history.

The sixth-ranked Lady Eagles won 22 of their final 24 games to finish the season with a 28-6 record.

West currently sports a 617-203 career mark.

The All-State basketball teams are picked by the ASWA’s prep committee, which chooses from a splendid list of athletes spanning seven classifications across the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA).

The Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) is also part of the annual process.

Player of the Year finalists will be unveiled Tuesday, March 12 online and Wednesday, March 13 in print.

See below for capsules on all local basketball players spotlighted by the ASWA, as well as the complete All-State basketball teams.

Name: Camryn Crider

School: Cold Springs

Year: Senior

Team Record: 28-6

Class: 2A

All-State Status: First Team

Highlights: Averaged 17.6 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. Had 82 steals and five blocks. All-County. All-Area. Northwest Regional All-Tournament Team. Class 2A State All-Tournament Team. Set state record with 157 3-pointers. Ranks second in state with 461 career 3-pointers. Tied state record with 13 3-pointers in a game. Had 15 20-plus point games. Won Bill Shelton Award. Finished with 2,002 career points. Helped team win Class 2A, Area 12 Tournament.

Coach Speak: “She is the purest shooter I’ve ever seen, and she’s worked extremely hard at it. We’ve had a lot of good 3-point shooters come through Cold Springs, but I think she’s the best. She really stepped up this year. Being a senior, she was a big leader on the team. Like I said, she just worked extremely hard. In the championship game, I saw her go up to players and say, ‘You got this.’ That’s how she was all year long.” — Cold Springs’ Tammy West

Name: Elizabeth Hill

School: Cold Springs

Year: Junior

Team Record: 28-6

Class: 2A

All-State Status: First Team

Highlights: Averaged 17 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. Had 63 blocks and 58 steals. All-County. All-Area. Northwest Regional Tournament MVP. Class 2A State Tournament MVP. Had 30 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, four blocks and four steals in Class 2A state championship game. Helped team win Class 2A, Area 12 Tournament. Led team in scoring in final five games of the season. Scored 30 or more points three times.

Coach Speak: “What helped her was working through her injury, her leg pain all year long. We preserved her in a way. By the time we got to the end of the season, she showed you what kind of player she is. Everything she did was based on 50 percent or less practice time this season, too. She spent a lot of that time getting treatment on her legs. But Elizabeth, she’s amazing. I can’t wait to see what she’s like next year at full strength.” — Cold Springs’ Tammy West

Name: Cole Maddox

School: Good Hope

Year: Junior

Team Record: 23-6

Class: 4A

All-State Status: Second Team

Highlights: Averaged 19.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. Had 74 steals and 15 blocks. All-County. All-Area. Helped team win first Cullman County Basketball Tournament since 2010. Eclipsed 1,000 career points. Led team in points, rebounds, steals and assists. Scored 20-plus points in 19 games. Had six double-doubles.

Coach Speak: “I am incredibly proud of Cole for achieving this accomplishment. A few years ago, I talked to this current group of 11th-graders, and one of our main goals was to put Good Hope basketball back on the map in terms of respect and the way we competed. Cole has been a foundational piece to our program the past two years and led his team in almost every single stat category this season. Cole was in the gym so much this past summer that he almost got burned out on basketball, but he is finally seeing all of that hard work pay off and recognized at the state level. I sure am glad to have him back for one more season and am looking forward to what him and his teammates can do in his final year.” — Good Hope’s Drew Adams

Name: Kyler Chaney

School: Holly Pond

Coach Speak: “Kyler is a tremendous athlete with great balance and body control. He’s an amazing scorer inside and out and a good defender. He has a high IQ of the game. We are very blessed to have Kyler on our team, and I’m very excited for next season.” — Holly Pond’s Mitch Morris

Name: Kelly Pickett

School: Hanceville

Year: Junior

Team Record: 14-11

Class: 3A

All-State Status: Third Team

Highlights: Averaged 18.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. Had 91 steals and three blocks. All-County. All-Area. Eclipsed 1,000 career points. Had a career-high 47 points against Red Bay. Scored in double figures in 19 games. Led team in steals in 17 games and rebounds in nine games.

Coach Speak: “Kelly deserves every award she receives, because she works her tail off. From last season to this season, Kelly improved tremendously. She developed her jump shot and improved her 3-point accuracy. For our team, she provides a huge offensive presence that we can rely on for points, and she does a great job settling us down in pressure situations. Her defense and rebounding really improved from last year as well. She was able not to foul and step up and guard the other teams’ best player.” — Hanceville’s Christina Watson

Name: Miriam Oldacre

School: West Point

Year: Junior

Team Record: 27-6

Class: 5A

Coach Speak: “Miriam is a competitor. She doesn’t like to lose. She works hard and takes it seriously. She is all business when she gets on the floor. She’s a fireball. Just an all-around good player. We looked to her when we needed a basket a lot of times. She is hard to guard and finds ways to score.” — West Point’s John Welborn

Coach Speak: “It’s so good to see all of the hours she logged in the gym pay off for her. She loves the game and, more importantly, she loves striving each day to get better.
