Diamond Roundup: Purvis blasts grand slam; Corner crushes Dora, Sumiton

The Corner softball team (2-1) combined to score 28 runs on two different opponents this week, claiming its first two victories of the 2019 season.

On Tuesday, the Yellow Jackets worked past Dora 15-0 in three innings. First baseman Lauren Dill and center fielder Jiselle Woodson both recorded multi-hit games while Dill, Jaden Goodwin and Ivey Hill each drove in a pair of runs for the home team.

Hill also got the start in the circle, striking out four Bulldogs while recording a no-hitter in the mercy-rule win.

Corner then welcomed Sumiton Christian on Thursday night for another mercy-rule win. The Jackets peppered their visitors with 18 hits on their way to a 13-3 win in six innings.

Goodwin, who also swung in five runs, and Abby Shenck led Corner with four hits apiece on Thursday. Hill logged her second win of the week, tossing another complete game shutout.

The Gardendale baseball team (4-2) beat Pinson Valley 5-3 at home in non-area play Tuesday and returned to play Thursday for a 6-4 home win over Dora.

Senior Hunter Henson provided plenty of offense for the Rockets on Tuesday when he found three hits, which resulted in two RBIs against Pinson Valley (3-7).

On Thursday, Gardendale pushed six runs across in its final three offensive innings, and held off a seventh-inning comeback attempt from Dora. Senior James Hancock led the Rockets’ offensively with two RBIs. Junior pitcher Andrew Valentine struck out five Bulldogs in 3 2/3 innings.

Gardendale hosts Curry in non-area play Friday.

The Gardendale softball team (7-2-1) lost to Spain Park 11-4 on Tuesday night at Mary Bowers Field in Birmingham.

The Rockets’ only offense came in the fifth inning when shortstop Carlee McCondichie squared up a grand slam, cutting the deficit to 6-4. Spain Park would douse the comeback with five more runs in the sixth.

Gardendale is scheduled to play in the Bevil State Invitational this weekend.

The Mortimer Jordan softball team (7-2, 1-0) went to Moody on Tuesday for a battle of Blue Devils, and came away with a 9-6 win in nine innings.

On Thursday, Jordan ran past Pinson Valley 10-0 in five innings. The Blue Devils were aided by an Anna Purvis grand slam—a no-doubter to leftfield.

The girls begin tournament play in Pelham on Friday night.

Ka’Mya Hampton and Hope Cole combined to pitch a no-hitter on Tuesday as the Pinson Valley softball team (4-9) bashed Shades Valley 23-0 in four innings. Hampton struck out five batters in three innings while Cole struck out two batters in one inning of work.

Cole and Savannah Mayes finished with four hits apiece for the Tribe.

Pinson Valley went to Mortimer Jordan Thursday for a 10-0 loss.

The Fultondale baseball team fell to 0-4 on the season thanks to a 22-9 loss at Southeastern Thursday night.

The Wildcats are scheduled to host Cleveland and Carver-Birmingham on Saturday.

The Fultondale softball team (2-1) claimed its second win of the season with a lopsided 19-2 victory at Heritage Christian Thursday night. The Wildcats also beat Hanceville by a count of 3-1 on Tuesday.

Fultondale opens up tournament play in Locust Fork on Friday against Cleveland High School.

The Corner baseball team (5-4, 1-1) took two of three games from Mortimer Jordan this week. Find the series recap here
