PREP BASEBALL: Cullman downs Spanish Fort 14-3, falls to Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 8-7

Cullman defeated Spanish Fort 14-3 before falling to Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 8-7 on Saturday.

Cooper Beck (two RBIs) and Dylon Wallace (RBI) collected three hits apiece in the opening win.

AJ Miller (two hits and one RBI), Peyton Colvard (one hit and three RBIs), Brady Patterson (one hit and two RBIs), Sam Baker (one hit and two RBIs), Ben Hollis (one hit and one RBI), Nicholas Braswell (one hit and one RBI) and Brennen Norton (one hit) led a balanced offensive showing for the Bearcats.

Cullman (4-1) scored all 14 of its runs in the second inning.

Braxton Jones scattered seven hits, three earned runs and seven strikeouts in the five-inning victory.

Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa sent the Bearcats to their first loss of the season with a walk-off single.

Cooper Beck (two hits and one RBI) and Ben Hollis (one hit and one RBI) each homered for Cullman.

Niklas Fondren (one hit and two RBIs), Peyton Colvard (one hit and one RBI), Brennen Norton (one hit) and Sam Baker (one hit) also contributed.

“Very proud of how the guys competed and played this weekend,” coach Brent Patterson said. “I thought we had good at-bats and strung hits together to produce some big innings. Our pitchers threw more strikes and, if we can continue to play good defense, we’ll be in most games with a chance to win.

“Playing three good teams away from home and learning from both the wins and the loss will only prepare us to be better down the road as the season progresses. We just have to keep working hard and get a little bit better every day. We’ll have some ups and downs in a long season, but if we just keep a good perspective then this team can do some really special things.”

% Cullman 8, Fairhope 5: The Bearcats scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to secure the win on Friday night.

Sam Baker delivered the go-ahead RBI single before Cooper Beck plated a pair of insurance runs with a two-out single shortly afterward.

Brennen Norton retired the side in the bottom half of the frame.

Ben Hollis hit a solo home run for Cullman.
