HANCEVILLE — Fairview’s varsity girls overcame a slow start on Monday and used a stellar second half to garner a 59-30 win against Vinemont at the Cullman County Basketball Tournament.

The No. 2 Lady Aggies (14-8) held a 20-13 lead at halftime but outpaced the No. 7 Lady Eagles 39-17 over the final two quarters to advance to Thursday’s semifinals, where they’ll play No. 3 Hanceville or No. 6 Good Hope at 7:30 p.m.

Molly McKelvy crafted a team-high 14 points for Fairview.

She was aided by Daisy Manasco (12), Jacy Gorham (10) and Katie Ball (nine) as well.

According to coach Justin Billings, it took a while for his group to get comfortable inside Tom Drake Coliseum.

“The main issue was the court size and different goals,” he said. “It took us a long time to get adjusted to that. Then we panicked and thought we couldn’t hit any shots. But we just had to remain patient and keep playing defense. Eventually we made some shots and stretched the lead out.”

Sadie Stanley (12), Kanasta Daniel (nine) and Bailey Preiss (six) were Vinemont’s top scorers.

The Lady Aggies will now turn their attention to Thursday’s matchup.

“The main thing is trying to get mentally stronger,” Billings added. “Keep working and getting ready to play. Those are two really good teams.”
