- Beware tax schemes
The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program is returning to Cullman to help residents prepare their tax returns before April’s filing deadline.
The free service will be available at the Cullman County Library at 200 Clark Street NE every Thursday beginning Feb. 7 and continuing through April 18.
Local coordinator Kaye Walker said the program is intended for low-to-moderate income taxpayers, but the volunteers in the program should be able to help with most individual tax returns and some small businesses.
“We will help just about everybody,” she said.
Clients are required to bring their 2017 tax return and Social Security cards for all persons listed on the return, along with a photo ID for the main taxpayer and spouse, if filing jointly.
In addition, bring all tax documents such as W-2s, 1099-Rs, interest and dividend statements and all documents related to medical expenses, taxes paid, mortgage interest, and charitable donations.
Walker said walk-ins will be served on a first-come, first-served basis, but those with appointments will have precedence.
