A 54-year-old man remains in custody after he was involved in a hit-and-run wreck that left a Holly Pond man dead Tuesday evening.

Brett Steven Amerson, 54, was charged with DUI and driving while license revoked. He was driving a white box truck at the time of the accident on Alabama 157, according to Cullman Police traffic homicide investigator Jonathan England.

The Times’ news partner, WBRC, reported that court records show Amerson has at least 11 DUI arrests and an attempted murder charge for 2016. 

Patterson’s death marked the fifth traffic fatality in the City of Cullman since July 26, and the third in the last eight days.

Amerson did not stop after the wreck and continued along Interstate 65, but was stopped 21 miles from the scene by a Cullman County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Daniel Cummings.

“I can’t say enough about the work by Lt. Cummings,” Warnke said. “He spotted the vehicle and made the traffic stop; without his efforts the suspect may well have gotten away.”

Additional charges are pending in the case. Amerson refused to be tested for his blood alcohol level at the Cullman County Detention Center, but on a portable test he measured .26, said Warnke, who added that an additional test was performed and sent to a lab for analysis in preparation for court.

“We will have more on that as the investigation concludes. There is a bond hearing in the morning,” Warnke said.
