West Point took a one-point cushion into the fourth quarter but expanded it and ultimately held Cold Springs at bay thanks to a smattering of clutch 3-pointers from Carter, Micah Oldacre and Olivia Ball.

Not to mention an unrelenting defense that paid dividends late in the contest.

“I think they (Cold Springs) got tired,” coach John Welborn said. “And I told my girls at the beginning of the game, ‘In the first and second quarter, Cold Springs is going to be fired up and ready to play.’ We just had to keep grinding and grinding. I knew it was going to be four quarters. I don’t care who they’ve lost to or who they almost lost to … when they play West Point, they bring their A-game.

“But we played better defense in the second half. We didn’t shoot the ball like we normally do in the first half, but in the third and fourth quarters, we started shooting like we do in practice.”
