With one holiday under the belt, motorists can expect to encounter a series of road projects along Interstates 65 and 565.

The Alabama Department of Transportation reports that commuters should expect closure of the outside lane and shoulder of Interstate 65 northbound between milepost 339 (north of the Tennessee River Bridge) and Exit 351 (U.S. 72) in Limestone County between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday for placement of raised pavement markers.

Pavement markers, or “reflectors,” will be placed on the centerline and gores (the triangular spaces at exit ramps) throughout this 12.4-mile section of I-65, which is currently undergoing a $15.3- million resurfacing project. The raised pavement markers are expected to improve visibility and lane delineation until resurfacing resumes in the spring.

“This will be a moving operation,” said Seth Burkett of ALDOT. “Everyone should drive with caution and be on the lookout for workers during this time.

The Alabama Department of Transportation anticipates that a detour will be implemented sometime Monday to reroute motorists bound for Greenbrier Road from Interstate 565 eastbound.

Weather permitting, the ramp from I-565 eastbound to Greenbrier Road will be closed for continued placement of temporary barrier rail, Burkett said.

No other ramps will be affected during this time. Eastbound traffic exiting to Greenbrier Road will be detoured at Exit 2 (Mooresville Road) to Alabama 20 (the north I-565 service road) eastbound to Greenbrier Road. Through traffic will not be impacted. The detour will remain in place through much of next year, until the new interchange ramps are constructed.

Reed Contracting will continue to place temporary barrier rail along the outside lane of I-565 eastbound Monday through Wednesday. The outside eastbound lane will be closed from about 8 a.m. to about 3 p.m. daily, he added.

After barrier placement is complete, there should be few interruptions to I-565 mainline traffic until much later in the project, when the portion of I-565 eastbound near the exit will be resurfaced.

The $10.2 million interchange modifications project is anticipated to continue into late 2019 or early 2020 and will reconfigure the eastbound ramps to and from Greenbrier Road, improving safety and traffic flow at the interchange, Burkett said.
