BIRMINGHAM — It was almost too easy for Addison’s volleyball team on Wednesday.

The top-ranked Lady Bulldogs crushed Fayetteville (25-11, 25-7, 25-6) and No. 6 G.W. Long (25-10, 25-7, 25-20) at the Class 2A state volleyball tournament to advance to their 10th straight championship match.

Addison (53-12) will attempt to claim its sixth straight state title and 11th overall when it takes on No. 2 Winston County inside Birmingham’s Bill Harris Arena on Thursday.

The match is slated for 8 a.m.

The Lady Yellow Jackets defeated Goshen and No. 3 Altamont to grab a spot in the finale.

Coach Kayla Woodard’s squad is 4-1 against Winston County this season.

The Lady Bulldogs bested their county rival to earn Area 13 and North Super Regional Tournament crowns.

However, the Lady Yellow Jackets ousted Addison to win the Winston County Tournament title.

“I felt like we played pretty well today,” Woodard said. “We worked together. I think it was an adjustment for us being in this environment, because we are young. They got their nerves out and settled down, though. It’s going to be a great match (against Winston County). It’s extra special, obviously, because it’s a rivalry. We know so much about each other, and I think that’s going to make it an even better match. The girls are excited and ready.”

Class 1A

Meek’s season ended with a first-round loss (25-16, 26-24, 20-25, 25-11) to sixth-ranked Pleasant Home.

Stats for the No. 5 Lady Tigers (30-26) were unavailable.

Class 4A

Fairview came up short against second-ranked Providence Christian (25-13, 25-15, 25-15) in the first round.

The 4A No. 4 Lady Aggies finished their season with a 49-20 record.

Despite the loss, it was a fantastic year for coach Tracy Means’ program.

Fairview won its third consecutive Cullman County Tournament in addition to the 4A, Area 11 Tournament. The Lady Aggies added a trio of tournament titles — Brindlee Mountain Invitational, Decatur Heritage Invitational and West End Tournament — as well en route to their first state appearance since 1998.

“A very great season,” Means said. “I don’t think I’ve ever had a team with that much success in one season. Forty-nine wins is big. That’s a lot of ballgames that they fought for and won. We just fell short here. Our serve receive got to us. And we’re normally pretty good at that. I think nerves, and it’s been a long time since we’ve been here. And it was a very good opponent.”

Fairview will lose three seniors — Tess Bailey, Alivia Boyll and Anna Scott — but hopes to return to Birmingham next season.

“We’re going to miss those three dearly,” Means said. “They’re such great kids. But I told the girls, ‘Look, we got in this year, we know what it’s about.’ And I expect them to work hard and be back next year.”
