Economic development efforts in Cullman have along been recognized for outstanding work.
Bringing new industries and businesses to area and the numerous expansions that guarantee job growth and stability are enviable accomplishments in Alabama and nationally.
But this week brought an even wider recognition of the Cullman Economic Development Agency when the International Economic Council announced awards for the local operation. CEDA was given a Gold Excellence in Economic Development Award for its Educators in Industry program and a Silver Excellence Award for the AGCOR Steel Expansion/Retention Project.
For the Educators in Industry Award, CEDA partnered with local industries and educators to expose more than 300 students and teachers to area businesses, the medical field and technical programs at Wallace State Community College.
CEDA Director Dale Greer provides educators an opportunity to see first-hand the jobs that are available for students in Cullman County when they graduate. The success of the program has prompted three other counties to inquire about starting similar offerings for students and teachers.
The AGCOR Steel project was recognized for the public/private partnership that kept the business in Cullman County, resulting in additional jobs.
Cullman has been recognized among the nation’s top three micropolitans several times for expansions and investments among communities of 50,000 population and under. Those awards are based on a carefully measured formula that follows money and square footage. While that award is always a positive sign for the local economy, the international recognition looks at measurable success along with creativity and cooperation.
As Susan Eller of CEDA noted, the awards represent one of the area’s most important ingredients for success — cooperation. With so many entities working together, the community’s leaders gain an advantage in serving its residents and securing more longterm economic growth.
Congratulations to CEDA, business and industrial leaders, and educators for building an effective relationship that provides opportunities within the community for success and growth.
