PREP FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Playoff push begins for local teams in Week 6 matchups
Published 6:21 pm Thursday, October 4, 2018
- Fairview’s Tyvn Ellis (20) looks to make a move past a Hanceville defender earlier this season. Fairview travels to North Jackson on Friday.
It’s never too early to start talking about the playoffs.
Currently, every football program in The Times’ coverage area is eligible for postseason play.
No team has been eliminated nor locked up one of four playoff spots in their respective regions.
With Week 6 upon us, that won’t be the case for much longer.
Before we look at these breakdowns, though, remember to cast your vote in “The People’s Pick,” a series of Twitter polls posted on my timeline (@winfreyjake) every Monday.
Onward.
Class 2A, Region 7
% No. 7 Addison (5-1, 2-0) at Colbert County (4-2, 3-0): The Bulldogs are beginning to heat up.
They’ve won four straight outings — outscoring their foes 170 to 49 in the process — and could take a big step toward a second region title in three years with a victory against the Indians.
This one is hard to predict, but I’m going to look at strength of schedule.
The combined record of Addison’s opponents so far this season? 18-13.
That same number for Colbert County? 11-20.

% People’s Pick: Addison (85 percent — 155 votes)
Class 6A, Region 7
% Athens (4-1, 1-1) at Cullman (3-3, 1-1): The Bearcats are back home for the first time in three weeks.
And they’ve got their hands full once again.
The Golden Eagles have averaged 32 points per outing in wins over Decatur (29-27), Hazel Green (37-3) and East Limestone (30-0) the past three weeks.
Their offense is spearheaded by junior Logan Smothers, a three-star quarterback committed to Nebraska, according to 247sports.com.
Cullman, though, has won four straight matchups in the series.
I expect this to be a close game.
% Jake’s Pick: Athens
% People’s Pick: Athens (80 percent — 138 votes)
Class 4A, Region 7
% Fairview (2-3, 1-2) at No. 7 North Jackson (5-0, 3-0): No team scores touchdowns better than the Indians.
Through five games this season, North Jackson has claimed a state-best 305 points — that’s an average of 61 points per contest — en route to its first 5-0 start since 2011.
Coach Mark Rose’s group also plays some defense, having allowed seven or fewer points in four outings.
It’s not going to be an easy task for the Aggies.
% Jake’s Pick: North Jackson
% People’s Pick: North Jackson (95 percent — 138 votes)
Class 4A, Region 5
% No. 9 Good Hope (5-0, 2-0) at Northside (5-1, 2-1): This should be a good one.
That’s the extent of my confidence about this particular matchup.
The Raiders produce a few more points (38.4 to 32.5) offensively and allow a few less points (10 to 19.3) defensively than the Rams on a per-game basis.
Northside, on the other hand, has played a slightly more difficult schedule and is 27-7 at home since 2012.
% Jake’s Pick: Good Hope
% People’s Pick: Good Hope (56 percent — 123 votes)
Class 3A, Region 5
% Hanceville (1-5, 0-3) at Midfield (4-0, 2-0): The Bulldogs have made progress under Cody McCain.
Despite five losses, Hanceville has entered the fourth quarter with a chance to win four of those matchups.
The Patriots, meanwhile, are 4-0 for the first time since 2009 and hold a close win over Holly Pond (36-30) already this season.
% Jake’s Pick: Midfield
% People’s Pick: Midfield (94 percent — 131 votes)
Class 3A, Region 5
% Locust Fork (2-4, 0-2) at Holly Pond (4-2, 1-2): The Broncos should be extra motivated in this contest.
The Hornets have won the past two outings (20-8 in 2017 and 37-31 in 2016) in this series, which resulted in Holly Pond ultimately drawing tougher first-round matchups in their postseason appearances.
I don’t expect that to happen this time around.
The Broncos are the better squad and, barring a sloppy performance, should rack up the victory.
% Jake’s Pick: Holly Pond
% People’s Pick: Holly Pond (89 percent — 126 votes)
Class 3A, Region 5
% No. 7 Fultondale (4-1, 3-0) at Vinemont (2-3, 1-1): The Wildcats boast 15 straight region wins for a reason.
And that reason is they are extremely good.
Since the start of the 2016 season, Fultondale has outscored its region foes 722 to 120 and has notched all of those aforementioned 15 victories by at least two touchdowns.
Senior Ja’Len Sims leads the charge for the Wildcats at fullback and linebacker.
He recently committed to Memphis and is listed as a three-star recruit, according to 247sports.com.
The Eagles will have their work cut out for them.
% Jake’s Pick: Fultondale
% People’s Pick: Fultondale (88 percent — 137 votes)
Class 5A, Region 7
% West Point (2-3, 0-3) at Jasper (4-1, 3-0): The Warriors are coming off a much-needed bye week.
The Vikings, meanwhile, are coming off a fourth consecutive win since a Week 0 loss against Cullman.
It’s so far been a disappointing season for West Point, which is in danger of missing the playoffs for only the second time since 2013.
With that in mind, I have a feeling the Warriors will play better football down the stretch.
These teams haven’t met since 2011.
% Jake’s Pick: Jasper
% People’s Pick: Jasper (86 percent — 130 votes)
% Jake’s Record: 40-6
% People’s Record: 34-12
