A rezoning request concerning 10 acres of property was withdrawn Monday at the Cullman Planning Commission.

The land, along Morningside Drive, was proposed to change from R-2 (residential) to B-1 (business). A letter submitted to the Planning Commission asked to withdraw the request and was signed by Wendy Childers of Weichert Realtors, who was representing clients who were potential buyers of the property. The land is owned by Elizabeth Jochum and James Roden.

At least 68 residents came to the meeting because of the proposal, but they left when Planning Commission Chairman Mike Voss announced that the request had been withdrawn. Because of the request, Voss said the matter wouldn’t be discussed.

Linda Romine, a Morningside Drive resident, said she was uncertain of the intent for developing the land.

“We would be fine with single homes, but we didn’t want it to become a business district in the middle of the neighborhood, or apartments,” Romine said.

In other business, the Planning Commission:

  • approved a short-form subdivision, divide two lots into three lots, at U.S. 278 West (4th Street SW) between Cleveland Avenue SW and Hickory Avenue SW.
  • approved a short-form subdivision, two lots, between Alabama 157 NE and County Road 102.
  • approved the 2019 Planning Commission calendar (meeting dates and deadlines).
