Physician urges city leaders to include vaping in clean-air ordinance

A physician urged the Cullman City Council to amend its clean-air ordinance to include electronic smoking devices.

Dr. Scott Warner of Cullman was added to the agenda at Monday’s meeting and made the pitch, citing information from the Surgeon General, that electronic cigarettes contain harmful ingredients.

The ordinance forbids smoking tobacco products inside public buildings.

“Many studies show young people start smoking with electronic cigarettes and then switch to tobacco,” Warner said. “This is not just a harmless vapor, it contains nicotine, lead and other substances.”

Warner said a variety of ultra-fine particles are in the substances used by electronic cigarettes smokers, and while the full-term damage is not know he said is likely not going to be good.

Council President Jenny Folsom said the request will be discussed in the future.

The council also recognized Cullman Police Department dispatcher Kara Johnson for five years service, and Sgt. Eric Cole for 10 years.

In other business, the council approved:

A request from Nathaniel Hutchinson of Cullman Moose Lodge for a special event permit to hold the annual turkey shoots at 1729 Eva Road NE from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. every Saturday in November and December.

A request from Cherrelle Fancher of Fancher Education Center for a special event permit to hold a trunk or treat at the Parking Deck from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on October 31st, 2018.

A request from Alanna Johnson of Beck’s Auto Body for a special event permit to hold a car show and cruise in at 1645 2nd Avenue NW from 2:00 p.m. until dark on September 29th, 2018.

A request from Chris Van Dyke of Cullman Mental Health Foundation for a special event permit to hold the 12th Annual Oktoberfest 5K and 10K starting from the Festhalle at 8:00 a.m. on October 6th, 2018.

A request from Rodney Maroney of Reliance Worldwide Corporation for a special event permit to hold a meet and greet with Jimmie Johnson and his race car from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on October 12th, 2018.

The council also passed resolution No. 2018-82 to move the council meeting from Oct. 8 to Oct. 1.

The council held a First Reading of Ordinance No. 2018-45 naming Turner Street NE.

Jim Davis was also to the Downtown Redevelopment Authority.
