- This is what the new deli inside Foodland is expected to look like. The store has already begun renovations prior to the vote, with a new sign going up outside several weeks ago.
The Gardendale City Council on Monday approved Mayor Stan Hogeland entering into a redevelopment plan with Foodland that will allow the Alabama-owned chain to make improvements and expand services in a renovation that is expected to cost approximately $800,000 to $1 million.
The project includes an expanded and updated produce section, meat section and frozen food section, as well as adding a bakery and deli that will include a “meat and three” option for shoppers. There will also be updates to the look of the inside of the store, according to spokesmen for the project.

There will also be new signage, including a new sign that was recently installed in the front of the store. The new offerings are expected to create 10-15 new jobs for area residents as well as providing new services.
The city, in return, agreed to split the anticipated increased sales tax revenue with the store, with each party receiving 50 percent of the increase until the amount reaches $800,000 or eight years, whichever comes first.
The tax break is set to only impact the expected increase so it will not have an impact on the money the city is currently receiving, but will still result in an increase for the city, according to Council President Alvin Currington.
The council also agreed to waive permit fees related to the project.
Work has already started on the renovation but a completion date has not been announced.
The improvements and expanded offerings are expected to result in $2.5 to $3 million in additional sales per year.
