The alleged kidnapping was originally reported at 1 a.m. Tuesday morning. Officers met with the teen’s mother, who shared what information she had.

Decatur and Huntsville police officers worked through the night to find the girl. Throughout the day, a number of agencies — including Athens police and Limestone County Sheriff’s Office — assisted in the search. Following a tip the alleged kidnappers may have been in a black minivan, officers began performing traffic stops on black or dark-colored SUVs and vans on Interstate 65.

The search ended at 3 p.m. in Florence when the girl was located unharmed.

“Initial reports stated that the female had been taken against her will in Decatur and transported to several locations all over North Alabama,” the release said. “It was reported on social media that the female was able to escape by breaking out a window and climbing out of the van in which she was being held. It was also reported on social media that the suspects in the alleged kidnapping were in custody.”

The release said the incident was fabricated by the alleged victim, and none of the incidents occurred.

Decatur police thanked agencies who assisted in the investigation. It was not immediately clear if the juvenile would face charges.
