Athens 29, Gardendale 22
The Rockets lost two fumbles and were called for eight penalties on Friday night in the home opener, as Athens (1-0) stole a 29-22 victory.
Gardendale (1-1) did manage to block a punt in the final minute, which resulted in a safety and cut the Eagles’ lead to 7 points. But the Rockets’ final heave was spiked down in the end zone as the clock ran empty.
Backup quarterback David Harris finished the game with two touchdown passes and another rushing. Normal starter Goose Crowder was not present on the team’s stat sheet.
Harris connected with Jonah Wright on a 25-yard score in the first half and later found Colt Belcher on an 11-yard touchdown toss in the second. The junior finished up with an 11-yard dash that cut Athens’ lead to 22-20, but the 2-point conversion failed.
That’s as close as the Rockets would get.
