- Mortimer Jordan senior Corley Sullivan spoke to the Kimberly City Council Monday night about her venture to bring a nationwide reading program to the city.
KIMBERLY—Corley Sullivan loves to read and she’s inviting residents of Kimberly to join her.
The Mortimer Jordan senior spoke to the Kimberly City Council Monday night about a project she’s started to encourage reading across her community. Sullivan, a steward for the Little Free Library nonprofit, hopes to have books available soon but needs book donations to launch the program.
The tiny library, which measures 21 inches wide and 23 inches tall, should be posted in Kimberly Park soon. People are invited to drop donations in the blue box upon its arrival.
“I thought it would be a great addition to the community,” said Sullivan. “I’ve always really loved reading, so I thought it would be great for people around the community to be able to share their love for books.”
The organization’s motto is “take a book, share a book.”
According to a pamphlet provided by Sullivan, there are more than 70,000 registered Little Free Libraries both foreign and domestic. Most of these small libraries are located in easily accessible locations such as parks, gardens, coffee shops or community centers.
“You take books that you think are interesting or if you read a book that you really love that you’re willing to share with the community, you can put it in there,” said Sullivan.
The libraries are built to hold as many as 100 books at a time.
Also at Monday night’s meeting, Kimberly Mayor Bob Ellerbrock announced the resignation of fire chief Chris Hardin, who held his post for nearly three years. His replacement will be former assistant chief Brendt Wood.
The council will meet next on Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m.
